Tomorrow is the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, inaugurated in 1571 by Pope Pius V to commemorate the Holy League’s victory at Lepanto after he ordered the faithful of Europe to pray to Herself for success. Our Lady of the Rosary has become, in some sections of the Church, a kind of talismanic feast, observed with a heavy nostalgia for the era of militant Christendom and temporal triumph.
