Canceling Mask Mandates

TOPEKA, Kan. (ChurchMilitant.com) – Republican lawmakers in Kansas rejected their Democrat governor’s statewide mask mandate just hours after it was extended.

The Legislative Coordinating Council of Kansas on Thursday revoked Gov. Laura Kelly’s mask mandate extension using a law that allows them to repeal the governor’s executive orders.

Three Republican state representatives, Blaine Finch, Ron Ryckman and Dan Hawkins, issued a joint statement explaining that government health mandates are supposed to be “short-term, data-driven and reserved only for pressing emergency situations.”

Governor Kelly lashed out after her mandate extension was revoked, claiming state Republicans are “more motivated by political publicity stunts than working together to protect Kansans and our economy.”

If data is the real driver behind the governor’s approach, then let’s rely on the numbers.

Contrary to the governor’s statement, Rep. Finch revealed, “The numbers don’t support a statewide mandate at this time.” He further reassured that local authorities could still institute health mandates if truly needed.

Unelected president Joe Biden last month gave comments akin to Kelly’s, berating states which allowed people to unmask. He labeled such opposition to mask mandates as “Neanderthal thinking” and begged Americans to put their masks back on.

Doctor Anthony Fauci, chief medical advisor to the president, also warned “masks are not theater, masks are protective.” But many states are taking center stage for ending mask mandates without seeing a dramatic spike in COVID cases.

Wisconsin and Wyoming are joining Kansas as the latest states to lift mask mandates. Texas lifted its restrictions in March, contrary to liberal warnings. But weeks later, the Lonestar state reported its “lowest seven-day COVID positivity rate” since data was collected.

Despite these promising numbers, Kelly still insists that Kansans must be protected from “the new COVID-19 strains that are wreaking havoc in other states.”

Nonetheless, 20 states have now lifted their mask mandates and are not reporting any COVID-related catastrophes.

Kansas representatives Finch, Ryckman and Hawkins are challenging the Democrat governor.

“If data is the real driver behind the governor’s approach, then let’s rely on the numbers,” they asserted.

The Kansas republicans reveal that Kelly issued her last statewide mask mandate when the seven-day average was 2,430 new COVID cases. She labeled it then as a “worrying spike.”

Government health mandates ‘should not be used to dictate Kansans’ daily lives year after year.’

The three representatives noted the current seven-day average in Kansas is now only 216 cases. They argue Kelly still wants to extend her “one-size-fits-all statewide mandate” with warnings of impending “havoc.”

All three representatives defended the Legislative Council’s revocation of the governor’s mask mandate extension. Kelly herself signed a bill into law last month that gives the Council power to revoke her executive orders.

Finch, Ryckman and Hawkins insisted that government health mandates “should not be used to dictate Kansans’ daily lives year after year.”
