Christmas Bells Ring Hopeful Notes Amid a Weary World

‘GOD IS NOT DEAD.’ ‘I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day’ by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, music by J.L. Hatton. The pencil annotation of the date appears to be by H.W.L. Dana, the poet’s grandson, who collected most of the sheet music in the collection at the Longfellow House-Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site. Longfellow himself is show in a photo by Black, c. 1862.

COMMENTARY: Longfellow’s 1863 Civil War-era poem reflects the resilience of the human spirit and packs power today.
