Doing Damage Control

A huge majority of Catholics are malformed on the Faith — and the subject of homosexuality is no exception. In tonight’s In-Depth Report, Church Militant’s Hunter Bradford blows the door wide open on a controversial ministry bishops may be using to prepare for the 2023 Synod.

An initiative related to the upcoming Synod on Synodality is doing damage control. The general secretariat of the synod of bishops has removed from the Synodresources.org website a link to pro-gay group New Ways Ministry. The site is meant to share “resources among dioceses, bishops’ conferences and official Catholic organizations.”

Thierry Bonaventura, the general secretariat’s communication manager, told Catholic News Agency on Tuesday, “In this case, my team was not aware of the clarification given by the USCCB president in 2010.” He’s talking about then-president of the U.S. bishops’ conference Cdl. Francis George condemning the ministry over a decade ago.

Michael Voris, Church Militant CEO: “And to be very clear, New Ways is nothing else than a lobby group for homosexual so-called rights.”

New Ways Ministry was cofounded in 1977 by two heretics, Fr. Robert Nugent and Sr. Jeannine Gramick. Sister Gramick thinks she knows better than Holy Mother Church, including on marriage.

Sr. Jeannine Gramick, New Ways Ministry cofounder: “I’m very saddened that some of our Church leaders have claimed that marriage must be between one man and one woman, that the definition of marriage has always been the same, that it cannot change. Well, this is simply not so.”

Pro-gay Jesuit Fr. James Martin said on the Jesuitical podcast back in 2017 that he’d canonize Sr. Gramick.

Fr. James Martin, S.J., America Magazine editor: “This is great. I’m going to canonize Sr. Jeannine Gramick. And so, yeah, I’d put her up. I don’t know — I haven’t read every single thing that she wrote, but yeah, I’d put her up for, if not canonization, then at least servant of God or beatification.”

As prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cdl. Joseph Ratzinger condemned New Ways Ministry’s founders in 1999, saying their positions on homosexuality are “doctrinally unacceptable.” The ministry’s executive director, Francis DeBernardo, believes he has support from the Holy Father.

Francis DeBernardo, New Ways Ministry executive director: “I think when a pope speaks, he doesn’t give orders as much as sets a tone for other Church leaders. So that means that LGBTQ people, lesbian/gay couples with families in parishes are going to be so much more comfortable and accepted.”

In fact, Pope Francis expressed his gratitude to DeBernardo in a June 17 letter earlier this year: “Thank you for your neighborly work.” The executive director then told National Catholic Reporter, “Despite what some Church leaders might say or think of us, it appears that Pope Francis is happy that we’re reaching out and helping to bring LGBTQ people into the Church and helping those who are here to stay.”

With the vast experience many bishops have in covering up abuse, it’s no surprise bishops are doing damage control on pro-gay messaging.

The CDF’s 1999 document prohibited both founders from “any pastoral work involving homosexual persons” and declared them “ineligible for any office in their respective religious institutes.”
