As liberal universities and schools across America embrace so-called equity and inclusion, many students don’t feel equal and are being excluded for expressing their views. Church Militant’s Aidan O’Connor takes a look at what college students are actually saying about freedom of expression.
A new poll is revealing America’s college students believe freedom of speech is in decline. Ipsos partnered with the Knight Foundation to ask college students if they felt free to express their opinions openly.
Students across the political spectrum (but especially on the right) all agree free-speech protections are dropping. The number of self-identified Democrats who feel free speech is protected dropped 2 percentage points since 2019. Confidence among independents dropped 13 points, from 59% to 46%.
The number of Republicans who feel they are free to speak has plummeted 25 points, from 52% down to only 27% — this, while the liberal establishment shills for inclusion and equity on college campuses.
Universities have long been a theater for opposing views and opinions.
Mario Savio, activist: “I’ll tell you something: The faculty are a bunch of employees, and we’re the raw materials. There’s a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart; you can’t take part. You can’t even passively take part.”
In 1964, The University of California Berkeley was ground zero for the Freedom of Speech Movement that swept the nation.
Savio: “You’ve got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you’ve got to make it stop, to the people who own it, that unless you’re free, the machine will be prevented from working at all.”
Now, leftist universities are ensuring all opinions and beliefs are welcomed and equal — unless they’re conservative.
