Hyacinth Castañeda, who — 250 years ago today, on Nov. 7, 1773 — was beheaded in a prison in Hanoi, Vietnam, where he had gone to preach the Gospel. He was 30 years old. Hyacinth was born to a comfortable and devout Catholic family in Spain; he entered the Dominican order when he was 14 years old, and professed his first vows days before his 16th birthday.
