Pope Francis’ pontificate is marked by taking one step forward and two steps back — and that’s being generous.

Pope Francis recently had an interview with a Vatican correspondent at Reuters. In it, the vicar of Christ condemned abortion.
Pope Francis: “On the problem of abortion — abortion is more than a problem, it’s a homicide. Abortion, without mincing words, whoever commits an abortion, murders.”
Out of the other side of his mouth, the Holy Father criticized bishops who bar pro-abort politicians from Holy Communion: “When the Church loses its pastoral nature, when a bishop loses his pastoral nature, it causes a political problem. That’s all I can say.”
The bishop of Rome does condemn abortion, but his moral theology is incoherent.
Back in 2016, a reporter asked him if the Church could take into consideration the concept of “the lesser of two evils,” referring to using condoms to prevent transmission of the Zika virus.
Francis responded, “The great Paul VI, in a difficult situation in Africa, permitted sisters to use contraception for cases of rape.”
The very next day, the Vatican spokesman doubled down: “The contraceptive or condom, in particular cases of emergency or gravity, could be the object of discernment in a serious case of conscience. This is what the pope said.”
The Catholic Church teaches proper ends do not justify sinful means. That truth can’t be changed whether or not the Holy Father likes it.
It’s important to note that the story about sisters in Africa taking the pill appears to be a myth. After the pope made that comment, no one was able to find any evidence that actually happened.
