A Vatican official is hailing the deceased modernist archbishop of Milan, Cdl. Carlo Martini, who died in 2012.
And although Martini never became pope, Church Militant’s William Mahoney tells us about this papal influencer.
Cardinal Michael Czerny, head of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, praised Martini on Monday, calling him a prophet.
In his final interview in 2012, Martini claimed “the Church is 200 years behind the times.”
Martini was archbishop of Milan from 1979–2002, and was considered to be the favored papal candidate of theological leftists.
Pope Francis has not only quoted Martini’s claim, “The Church is behind the times,” but he also echoed Martini’s flawed theology about God.
Martini said in 2007, “You cannot make God Catholic. God is beyond the limits and definitions that we establish.”
Pope Francis said in a 2013 interview, “I believe in God — not in a Catholic God.”
Again in his final 2012 interview during the reign of Benedict XVI, Martini said: “I advise the pope and the bishops to seek out 12 people outside the lines for administrative positions” — [those] “who try new things.”
And only months after his election in 2013, Pope Francis instituted the Council of Cardinals to aid “in the governance of the Universal Church.”
Two council members, Cdl. Óscar Rodríguez Maradiaga and Cdl. Reinhard Marx, openly support doctrinal changes regarding sexual morality.
Martini himself also insisted civilly divorced and remarried Catholics should be allowed to receive Holy Communion.
While Martini never became pope, it seems Pope Francis is busy ushering in Martini’s plan for the Church.
Czerny also lauds a 1986 archdiocesan convention overseen by Martini as inspiration for the upcoming Synod on Synodality.
