The cross and war: Visual words

To recount the unspeakable horror of war, European artists — including those far away from the Church – used the image of Christ’s death on the cross. The Vatican Museums’ Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art, established by Pope Paul VI in 1973, preserves significant evidence of this. Several masterpieces are on exhibit; others are kept out of the public eye in warehouses and storerooms.
