The largest Catholic health care system in the United States, CommonSpirit Health, operates more than 700 care sites and 142 hospitals in 21 states.
The report first shows the background of CommonSpirit: how it acquired its Catholic identity and maintains it in the public eye. It also explains the various mergers carried out since 2019, which have allowed CommonSpirit Health to become the largest Catholic health care system in the United States, and also the second chain of non-profit hospitals in the country.
It then provides evidence of support and public promotion of homosexual and transgender ideologies by CommonSpirit Health. Through the testimonies, this section shows a company-wide perversion, in direct conflict with its Catholic identity.
The report further proves that CommonSpirit provides employee health benefits covering gender reassignment surgeries, transgender hormone therapies, and puberty blockers for children. They also cover all contraceptive methods, surgical sterilization, and “medically necessary” abortions.
Evidence is then provided that CommonSpirit Health facilities perform gender reassignment surgeries, cosmetic surgeries to alter the outward appearance of people in transition, and other “services” for transgender people.
Finally, the report proves that several CommonSpirit facilities, including its own Catholic hospitals, provide all forms of contraception, including abortifacients. One of the CommonSpirit establishments openly performs surgical sterilizations and voluntary abortions.
Established in 2019, CommonSpirit Health derives its Catholic identity from the sponsorship of the Catholic Health Care Federation, a “public juridical person” whose authority rests with the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. This means that direct control and jurisdiction over CommonSpirit Health rests with the Apostolic See.
In light of the findings, the Lepanto Institute calls on the bishops of the United States to revoke the Catholic identity of CommonSpirit Health and all “Catholic” hospitals identified in this report. In addition, the Lepanto Institute calls on bishops to require their Catholic hospitals to disaffiliate from CommonSpirit Health or lose their Catholic title.
Finally, the institute asks the bishops to offer the faithful public acts of penance and reparation for the evil that CommonSpirit commits and had committed under the guise of its Catholic affiliation.
